Title: Where Children Play
Medium: acrylic on canvas
This is an acrylic painting that is a few years old and is part of a series I called Institutional.
The location is Pennhurst State School, a former institution for mentally disabled children. Many of those housed here, however, were simply uneducated or considered "troublesome" by their families. There is a really moving documentary called Suffer the Little Children which was made in the 60's and reported on the disturbing conditions of this institution as a result of underfunding and staff shortage. I am happy to send it to anyone who requests.
